Have the conversation

Hello Readers,

One of my career goals is to be a professor. As you may know there are many steps to becoming full time faculty at any college/university. A person needs to gain the right credentials and workforce experience to achieve this. One step I know I will need to take is to get my doctorate. I am a firm believer in the fact of whatever I want to do, someone has already done it and been successful therefore, I can simply ask for their advice. I recently had lunch with a woman I met who is a professor at the school I am considering attending for my doctoral studies and she has her doctorate. I asked what her journey was like and what advice could she give me. The conversation was very informative. I felt my anxiety diminish after speaking with her. I feel confident in my decision to move forward.

What is one of your career goals? Who is already doing what you want to do? Seek and find this person and have the conversation. Meet them for lunch, send them an email, or text them and pick their brain. In actuality we all need each other. We cannot “make it” without the help of someone else, so go and be bold. Ask the question and have the conversation.

Create your career

Hello Readers,

The days of the one job on the resume are over. Today, people have multiple jobs on their resume and it is okay. I still however recommend only going back 10 years. There is no need to be afraid of being on a job for 1-2 years. People are no longer loyal to companies and companies are always seeking new talent. This new wave of job hopping is what I call “creating your career.” If you do not know what you want to do, then try it all, well not everything, but at least try 5 things you are interested in. For example, if you have always wanted to write but you want to start small, be a guest blogger on sites like Mashable and Life Hack. While you are writing you may want to get into selling, therefore check out what is going on in the direct selling market. Next you may want to create an online store and start selling your items on Ebay or Amazon. Now, you may be saying, Marla, these are not careers, my point exactly. Times have changed. You have to create your own future with different areas of interest. For example I love to learn and bring it to my readers so they can enhance their lives and someone else’s, after all this is what it is all about, sharing information.

Get out there now and create your career, do not wait for anyone to do it for you.

You did not get the job now what?

Hello Readers,

A few years ago I interviewed for a position I knew in my bones I was a great fit for. I had all the requirements they were seeking. I also had the personality and drive to excel at the position; therefore, I knew I was going to rock the interview and get the job. Well, I impressed the managers and my future teammates. I took a tour of the building and even saw where my desk would be. After the interview I headed home and did what we all do, waited impatiently (after I sent my thank you and follow up email). A week went by, then two weeks, and nothing. The recruiter called and I was ready to hear my start date and the words that came out of the recruiters mouth was not what I was expecting to hear. I did not get the position. I asked what could I have done differently in my interview and on my resume, she stated nothing, everything was done in excellence, however they chose an internal candidate. I told this story to tell you this one thing, Keep It Moving (K.I.M.). I had to keep applying and keep believing in my abilities to do the job I desired. I encourage you to do the same. So what you did not get the job, move on. Time is too precious to sulk, we have to K.I.M.

Here are some tips to help you K.I.M. after a unhappy job declination:

1. Ask what you can do differently for the next interview
2. Ask can you reapply if needed.
3. Keep applying for jobs until you land the job you desire.

Are you qualified?

Hello Readers,

Our household is very excited we are finally in the Olympic season, us like many others, are Olympics junkies. Is there anyone who can relate to what I am writing here? What amazes me are the qualifications the potential Olympians have to endure just to get to the Olympics. I think about the dreams these men and women have to get achieve one thing and how laser focused they are. These Olympians know that have to “qualify” to achieve the dreams of their heart. As I apply for adjunct positions for teaching, I sometimes think to myself “these schools want so much from you,” but, then I think about the committee of the Olympics and how they only want the best to represent the different countries. The same is true for myself when I applying for teaching positions, the schools only want the best. These same rules apply to you as you are creating a career path. Employers only want to best, they want dedicated individuals who are willing to learn and do their best to represent the job. As I normally end my blogs with a question, ask yourself are you qualified? If there is a position you seek, do you have the skillset and desire to learn to fit the mold of what the position entails? If not get busy learning, reading, taking classes, and serving. You will achieve what you believe.

Know the company

Hello Readers,

This will be a fairly short message because I want you to start your homework on this one. Yes I am giving you homework. Let me ask you this, when you are applying for a job or hoping to land a certain type of job, do you research the company? Do you know what year the company was established? Who is the C.E.O.? These are all simple questions you SHOULD know the answers to. During the interview process these questions may be asked or even better it is best if you study the facts you have researched and create your own questions. For this reason alone, we have created the Company Cheat Sheet. I recommend filling out this sheet for each company and position you desire. Once the sheet has been completed, the next step is to study your answers and be prepared to show what you have learned on the interview. Nothing impresses an interviewer more than the fact that an interviewee knows something about the company. It shows that you know how to study and research and that you do not mind learning. I would hire someone who is willing to learn and strive over someone who knows everything and not willing to grow. Think about it.
