Moving from being a Novice to a Negotiator

Current leadership skill level: Novice. A novice is a new learner or a leader who does not know all or any of the details of their new role.

How to build negotiation skills as a strength: A leader must be able to negotiate for their team. Teams will follow a leader who they believe in and who will have their back (Menges, Kilduff, Kern, & Bruch, 2015). A leader can build negotiation skills by having a mentor who was in the role previously before them.

Menges, J. I., Kilduff, M., Kern, S., & Bruch, H. (2015). The awestruck effect: Followers suppress emotion expression in response to charismatic but not individually considerate leadership. The Leadership Quarterly, 26, 626–640. https://doi-org.proxy1.ncu.edu/10.1016/j.leaqua.2015.06.002
