Recognizing Truth

Hello Readers,

I have a question for you. Have you ever been turned down for job that you knew you were perfectly qualified for? What did you do? Did you call the recruiter to inquire about any mistakes you can learn from (which I highly recommend doing)? Or did you reapply for the same job again because they must have made a mistake (yes people have done this many times over). The truth is you did NOT get the job; therefore, you need to ask what you can improve upon and Keep It Moving (K.I.M.)! Accept the truth that you were not hired and keep applying for jobs. Do not become stuck on what you “want” to be real but it really isn’t.  I recently had a moment of truth and let’s say it was a truth I should have recognized a long time ago but, I refused to because I wanted it to be what I imagined it could be. The ironic thing is I witness clients do this all the time. At times they do not see or better yet want to confront, what is in front of them concerning their careers and life, however I can see it bright as day. We all need someone who can stand on the outside of us and tell us what we do not see. Isn’t it amazing how we all need each other to help us as I stated last week?

Here are 3 tips to help you recognize truth:

1. Ask the opinion of people you REALLY trust. Your friends and family see things you can’t see which will impact your life and career.

2. If 2-3 total strangers tell you the same thing then it is the truth, believe it.

3. Do a weekly if not daily self-examination. Take time to think about why you do the things you do, believe me, there is a reason and you will find it only if are honest with yourself.

Leadership Series Part 2: Vulnerability

Hello Readers,
Leadership Series Part 2
Vulnerability

The next leader I received some great tips from is Brene Brown. I had not heard much about Brene until the ATD Conference. I was simply mind blown at her bluntness to tell the world how she feels about being vulnerable. I love her creativity and drive to just “be.” Let’s see what Brene (who has the 5th most watched TED talk) has to say about being vulnerable. Ponder on these powerful thoughts.

1. We are taught to “toughen up”, but why?
2. What is the story you are telling yourself right now? What are you telling yourself?
3. We love stories, we are wired for them. Our brains seek a story.
4. Courage is teachable and it needs to be spoken with emotion.
5. Vulnerability is not a weakness, it is the most accurate measure of courage (I love this!)
6.  Know exactly why you are being brave.
7. There are 7 elements of trust:
            a. Braving
            b. Boundaries
            c. Reliability
            d. Accountability
            e. Vault
            f. Integrity
            g. Non-Judgement
            h. Generosity

When I think of trust, I did not think about the depth of the word until I heard Brene's message. Trust involves having courage and having courage means being vulnerable. How can you be more vulnerable today? What areas in your life can you be more vulnerable?

Feedback

Hello Readers,

Do you want to grow in your life professionally and personally? Do you want to advance in your life and career? If you answered yes to these questions then you will need to learn to accept feedback. I define feedback as the opinion of a trusted person, preferably in your circle of friends or within your work/career realm. Feedback normally comes in two forms, positive and negative. We love it when we receive the positive; however it is the negative that we need to understand. When was the last time you received negative feedback? How did it make you feel? The key is to not take it personally. Do the next best thing with the feedback, follow it and move forward. Take the necessary steps needed to grow and not stay the same. Feedback is needed for growth, therefore you need it rather you want it or not. Take it and grow.
