What are you waiting on?

Hello readers,

I recently stepped out in faith for one of my MANY visions. I recently hosted my first annual women's empowerment conference. I have envisioned myself  hosting conferences because I attend them annually and the information I gain from the speakers is knowledgeable and applicable. I went to a conference earlier this year and said to myself "you know what Marla I can do that." So I started my journey. I had four dynamic speakers and nine vendors which resulted in people showing up. The support I had could not be explained. It was not a huge crowd however, it was a start. Now the buzz is out there and people are asking about next year's conference in which I am currently in the planning phase for. It is very exciting to have a vision and step out on it. I know one of my callings is to set a platform for women to speak and this is how I am going to achieve it.  Steve Harvey calls it  "taking a  leap." You have to take the jump. The worst that can happen is you fail and failing is only in the eye of the holder. So I ask, what do you need to take a leap of faith on? What is burning on the inside for you to do? I did not have all the answers but I did it anyway. I am looking forward to planning on making my women's conference one of the premier conferences here in my home town. How cool is that?

What do you need to take a leap of faith for? What are you waiting on?

Leadership Tips from Simon Sinek

Hello Readers,

Leadership Series

Leadership is one of the many topics I love to study. Over the next month or so I will share with you some leadership tips I have received from leaders such as EVP, Authors, and parents. I know their words of wisdom will inspire you as they have done for me.  First I will share some takeaways from Simon Sinek

I recently attended a trainer’s conference and Simon Sinek was one of the key note speakers. If you have not heard of Simon, he has the 3rd most watch TED Talk ever and he is a blooming pioneer on structuring the way leadership is defined. Here are some key points I took away from Simon’s message.

1. Leaders set the condition of any organization.
2. Leaders provide the safety net for their people.
3. Leaders have to find the vision of the organization not create one; only then will the people jump on board.
4. The charge of a leader is to take care of the people not take charge of the people (My favorite)
5. Leadership takes great personal sacrifice.
6. We all have the capacity to be leaders but we all should not take this role.
7. C.E.O.s' do not take care of the results, the people do. C.E.O.s' take the blame for the results.
8. Leadership is making a cup of coffee when you drank the last cup.
9. Leadership is holding the elevator door when you see someone behind you.
10. Leaders do not use humans to balance books; their sole reason is to protect the tribe.
11. Leadership is in your daily routine

My new friend

Hello Readers,

I just came back from the Association for Talent Development International Conference and Exposition better known as ATD ICE. This year this annual event was held in beautiful Denver, Colorado at the convention center. The conference hosted over ten thousand people from all over the world. I had the great opportunity to meet people from the Netherlands, Brazil, China, Japan, and Canada. I made lasting connections with a few people from here in the states as well. One relationship I wanted to share with you is with my new found friend from Tokyo, Ami. Ami sat next to me in one of the sessions we attended. The funny thing about us meeting was I asked her for some lotion and she gave me some oil to use (that smelled great by the way). We were friends from that point on. The great thing about this story was Ami was so happy to be at the conference and meet people from the United States. She shared with me that her English was not good but she is working on it, so I found myself translating for her to assist her with speaking to other people (like I know Japanese). She said that she was so happy we met and she wanted to keep in touch and I obliged. I am happy to say I have a friend now in Tokyo, Japan. Through meeting Ami I have opened my mindset more to the beautiful world that is out there and the people that occupy it and that my reader is a wonderful thing.

Personal Development costs what?!

Hello Readers,

How much did you spend on personal development in 2015? Wait before you answer this question. Let’s think about the vacations we took last year or the movies we went to see. How much did those cost on average? I’ve heard the average American spends $2-5K on vacations or more and $300-500 a year in going to the movies. Now answer the question, how much did you spend on books, coaching, career development, conferences, schooling, certificates, educational dvds and/or cds? Some of these mentioned can cost and upwards of 10K or more. I am not suggesting that you spend 10K on personal development in one year (even though that is not a bad idea); however I am suggesting that you set aside some monies to attend a conference, buy 10 books, or invest a life or career coach. If you do not have the cash now it is okay, just save the money, the same way you are saving for that Disney Cruise. I am not suggesting anything that I have not done or currently implementing in my own life. I am a big fan of personal development. My husband and I have purposed to set aside money each month just for personal development. After all growth coupled with development is what leads to success.

Why I attend conferences?

Hello Readers,

This is an easy question for me to answer. The answer is simple: LEARNING. I am striving to be one of the best in my field of training & development and coaching, therefore learning is key to my success. Attending conferences are excellent ways to gain expertise from others in your field. The multiple workshops and seminars supply various useful tools needed for your career or business. I have heard people say “Marla they cost too much”. I say look at it as an investment in yourself or your business. People will invest $200 in a pair of shoes but not in a conference to gain knowledge. I personally have no issues with that, but I do not always agree when people tell me they cost too much. I also hear they are a waste of time. Sure they can be a waste of time if someone approaches them in that manner. Remember life is what you get out of it. When I attend conferences, I am fully loaded with my notebook and pen ready to glean all the information I can.  Now here is the flip side, some people are conference junkies. DO NOT DO this, especially if your company is paying for them. Only attend conferences that will aid in your professional, personal, and/or business growth, anything outside of those are a waste of your time.
