Three Tips for developing and maintaining relationships in the workplace

Hello Readers,

Answer this question, how many of your close friends started with a relationship developed in the workplace? I can name quite a few, however I can only name 2 or 3 that I am still in contact with today. We as adults go to work to earn a paycheck and do satisfying work along the way (well that is the way it should be); however, we WILL meet people and start to develop relationships. We do not “plan” to meet anyone but, because we are human and we need to “feel” loved we will naturally seek to talk to people whether you are introverted or extroverted. I have learned along the way some of the relationships are just for “work” and some are for a life time. I follow these three tips to help me in discerning relationships at work.

1. Give and Take. No this is not being selfish. In any relationship there should be a give and take factor. I can look at all of my friends whether I met them at work or not and I can see where I can contribute to them and I can see where they contribute to me. Ask yourself do you find yourself always giving to the other party and receiving nothing in return? If yes, this relationship will not last. If you are the taker, then you may want to start evaluating how you can give to the other party. There should be some level ground, it may not be 50/50 all the time but, you will know how to gauge who is giving/taking more.

2. Is there a foundation away from work? Seems like a simple factor however, very profound. If work is all you and the other party can speak about when you talk, then you may want to evaluate this relationship and accept it for what it is (a work relationship, nothing more). The easiest method for this is to ask what else you share in common with the other party. Majority of ALL relationships have something in common, there has to be something that connected you to that person in the first place. Remember what brought you and the other person together.

3. Support. A “true” friend will tell you the truth and not hide anything from you. They will always have your best interest at heart and they will not take someone else's word about you over what they have come to learn about you themselves. Can you meet this person at work? Yes you can. True friends are developed at work all the time. Simply follow steps 1 and 2 and you will know if they are a true friend or not.

These are lessons I have learned along the way in life and still practice.

Who are you with?

Hello Readers,

Have you ever heard the saying “show me your five closest friends and I will tell you where you are going"? Or something similar? Well, this is a true statement. Take a minute and think about your five closet friends. I want you to examine their lives, careers, hobbies, and overall being. Do these areas fit your core values? Are they friendly to people, do they serve others, do they have a plan for life, how do they treat their family, do they love themselves? If you cannot answer these questions in a positive manner you may need to rethink who you are hanging around. The world WILL judge you by the company you keep. This does not mean do not talk to people, it simply means to be mindful of who you call a friend. Always remember the sum total of those you hang around will tell where you are headed, therefore examine and take action.

Extra tidbit: Notice I did not mention to examine your friends financial status, because it is not how much you make, it is how you spend what you make, but that is another blog post :)

Something to think about. Your thoughts are welcome...

10 Small Steps for the New Year

Happy New Year!

It is a new year. It is time for growth and change. I speak of growth and change because we as individuals should be growing on a daily basis. Small steps are what lead to success not big leaps. Here are 10 small steps to get your new year off to a great start:

1. Write it down! What do you want to accomplish this year? Get it on paper now!
2. Review what you wrote daily. What action steps are you doing to get you closer to what you want?
3. Read. Read anything that will add growth. Do you want to learn how to control your emotions? Read about emotional control. I think you get it…
4. Do not say I will lose 10 lbs, simply cut something small out from your diet and watch the difference it makes.
5. Relax! Seriously… Take time for yourself. The show will go on without you. Really it will!
6. Do something silly… Who cares what others think. Just do it.
7. Have a nothing day! These are some of the best days. Even if it is planned.
8. Have you written anything down yet? I say this again because it is that important.
9. Surround yourself around happy people.
10. Do not sweat the small stuff. Really. It is really small.

Enjoy and LIVE this year

Let me know your thoughts…

Spending time

If I want to learn more about a person I will not ask the person anything. I will ask the people they are associated with. On average we as adults have 3-4 close friends and many associates. Those 3-4 friends tell the world everything anyone would need to know about who you are. According to Harvard psychologist Dr. David McClelland those people are called your reference group and these people will determine 95% of your success or failure in life (Maxwell, 2014). Now that I have your attention, do a quick examination of who is in your “circle”. Take a moment to write their names down and the value they bring in your life. Do they have career, family, life, and fun goals? Do they value who they are? Are they positive, friendly, obedient, or courageous? Really think this over and let us know your thoughts. Remember if there is no value, you may need to rethink who is in your reference circle.
