5 reasons to say No

I believe we sometimes get caught up in the "people pleasing" zone of life. While it is ok to want to ensure a smile on everyone's face you meet, sometimes you are going to have to say no and it is actually a freeing experience.

Here are 5 reasons why:

1. You are too tired and you know you will not be able to put your 100% into the request. Do not give people half of you, just say no when you know you cannot give your all.

2. You simply do not have the time to commit. I believe we make time for what we want, therefore choose your time wisely. We all have 24 hours. Time cannot be managed it will move regardless.

3. An area in your life is being neglected. Remember you have to take care of you too. On airplanes you secure yourself then the child.

4. You have simply lost interest. If the book is boring, put it down. If you do not like the restaurant, stop going. Just tell yourself you will stop. YOU ARE IN CONTROL. Why force yourself?

5. Peace. Saying no and loving yourself brings peace. Nothing can surpass having peace.

Leader vs Manager. Are you both?

Hello Readers,

I am not sure why there is such debate on being a leader vs being a manager. They are NOT the same however, a leader could be a manager, but not all managers are leaders. Here are 5 reasons why:

A Leader demonstrates while a Manger tells.
A Leader teaches while a Manager oversees.
A Leader challenges the status quo while a Manager follows what is told.
A Leader knows the job function while a Manager knows of the job function.
A Leader has and displays passion for the growth of others while a Manager considers evaluation time a task.

This list is not to bash managers; however, it can be used to reflect if the manager is doing both tasks. As manager ask yourself are you demonstrating and telling, are your teaching and overseeing, are you following what you are told and sometimes when needed challenging the status quo, can you perform the job function and describe it, and can you do the task of evaluation with passion and authentic care? All ten items can and should be done, however if all ten are done consistently, the manager is certainly a leader. Remember the saying “ One does not need a title to be a leader”, so start today!

Social Media can hurt you, really!

Hello everyone,

Here are social media facts I just read in Talent Development magazine (October Issue 2014):

-51% of employers who decided against hiring a potential job candidate but chose not to due to their social media activity.
-43% of employers who do an overall research on social media before hiring.

The first fact was a shocker to me, not because of the fact that the employers will not hire, but because the social media activity was that horrible they could NOT hire/changed their minds (that is sad). The first fact means the interview and resume were impeccable, but the potential candidate's social media was less than expected. I have learned that social media is the truth about people. People show who they really are on all the various social media sites. It looks as if companies have picked up on this as well and are using it to their advantage.

Here is the best advice I can share, if you do not have anything nice or respectful to say then do not say anything. You do not have to post your every move nor comment on everything you see. Oh and yeah that drink you had, keep that to yourself. It tells the employer that you like to drink on occasion (which there is nothing wrong with that if you do) but, the picture you post may look as if you may not be able to control yourself. At that point your great interview and resume are out the window.

10 Things that bring me joy!

Hello Everyone!

I was  recently reading a book  and the author spoke on listing 10 things that bring you joy. The author expressed thinking about the simple things in life. Here is my list of things I love to do that just bring me a smile to my face:

Sit in a library or bookstore with a few books and just read through them.
Sit across from the table and eat with my husband.
Sit on my couch or favorite office chair and read.
Sit in silence with God. Such peace it brings.
 Travel, simply just drive places.
Eat at places I have never eaten at.
Surprise people with things they want.
Sit and listen when wisdom speaks.
 Learn.
Talk to people. People are so interesting to me.

I have many more but this is enough for you to at least begin your list. As we enter into the Thanksgiving Holiday think about what simple things in life bring you joy? What makes you smile?

Gratitude and Joy… these are what makes life a successful journey.
