40 years in 5 tips of wisdom

Hello Readers,

My husband and I wanted to share with you some things we experienced this year. The sharing is twofold. I am sharing five exciting things that happened in 2015 and my husband will share a few tips he has learned in 40 years since he just celebrated his 40th birthday. We hope you enjoy:

A glimpse of what Marla did this year:

1. I saw Sam Smith live
2. I graduated with my Master’s Degree in Adult Education
3. I toured the Biltmore Estates
4. I read 20 books (had a goal of 50) but reading articles and magazines got in the way :)
5. I realized the strength God gave me

Carlos’s five tips of wisdom:

1. The harvest is always greater than the seed, so sow bountifully.
2. Anger is never a primary emotion. It is always a secondary emotion
3. We will eventually become the average of the five people with whom you are mostly associated with.
4. If nobody will pay you to do what you love, you have a hobby, not a business or career.
5. Take interests in your spouse’s interests.

Finish 2015 Strong

Leadership in the morning

Hello Readers,

“I am not a morning person”. Have you heard this phrase before? I am sure you have. Have you stopped to asked yourself what does this phrase mean and what does it have to do with leadership? Let’s break this down. If a person is not a “morning person” and they do not mind expressing that feeling, that person leaves an impression of “do not mess with me in the morning”. In some people’s eyes this may be okay but, what about for a leader of a team? If a leader walks in the office and the first thing their team notices is that they are not a morning person, this can send a bad message to the team. A leader has to be an “all day” person whether they want to or not (emotional intelligence). Sure someone may need their coffee in the morning to get them energized but, the coffee should not be the motivating factor. As a leader you have to LEAD and a person cannot lead properly if they are not in the “mood” to do so. If you are a manager or desire to be a leader in your organization, you may want to rethink not being a “morning person”. It could send a message to the world you are grumpy and do not want to be bothered and no one wants a grumpy morning person as a leader or manager.

Compliment a comment

Hello readers,

"Always compliment a comment and don't comment on a comment". I heard this phrase nearly three years ago from a man of great wisdom and it has stuck with me ever since. Now, does that mean I follow the phrase each time I speak? No, I do not but, I do make effort. I interpreted this phrase to mean, whether someone says something that does not make sense to you, simply state a kind word after the statement has been made. For example, people say things to me all the time that I do not agree with or that do not make sense, if what they are stating is not demeaning/abusive to others, I simply say "okay, you have a point". This does not mean I am not speaking the truth, it means I do not have to comment negatively on everything someone says. Complimenting a comment can be used with friends, family, spouses (especially spouses), and in the workplace. Next time someone says something to you that you may or may not agree with and it is not offensive to others, say "I understand, I get it, or I see your point". Try it, it will show your maturity level.

Change

Hello Readers,

I think I have figured out why sometimes we are afraid of change. Change is the unknown and the uncomprehending. If we cannot wrap our hands around what is changing in our lives we tend to panic and become anxious. In actuality the change we are afraid of is not really scary at all. As human beings we have a natural tendency to want to know everything and not be surprised. In essence we want to be prepared for everything. I once heard a phrase that changed my life "there is a blessing in not knowing". Wow! What powerful words. My lesson learned from this is change is good. Just imagine if we did not experience change. For example, we would have the same president, we would wear the same clothes, we eat the same foods, we would visit the same cities, and that could be boring. But Marla, I am not talking about that type of change. I figured someone would say that. Guess what? Change is change (let that sink in for a moment). Change is going to happen whether you want it to or not. The big secret to being afraid of change is this: your response. How we react to the change is going to be the deciding factor. Change is good. The unknown is good. Just sit back, relax, and let change happen. It is well.
