3 Major Lessons Learned in 2016

Hello Readers,

WOW! Yes, that is how I am starting this post off. My year has been nothing but amazing. It is VERY difficult for me to describe in a mere three lessons what I have learned this year but here goes my best shot at it. I hope these lessons inspire you as they have me

1. I learned to Live! I am literally tearing up as I write this. Yes, I learned to live this year. I had to realize I was living someone else’s dreams and not pursuing my own. Sure I have the degrees and a great job but, something was not right. I would daydream about doing certain things and I could never decide how to get started. I had to make some MAJOR decisions in my life in 2016 and the main one was that I decided to LIVE the life that Marla wants to live. #LiveYourLife

2. I learned to watch. Don’t assume things about people. Don’t assume they are nice, don’t assume they are mean, don’t assume they want to do business with you, and don’t assume anything. I ask you to simply WATCH.  I learned people show you who they are every day. Trust your instincts and watch and learn.

3. I learned to embrace my authentic self. I am funny, loving, persistent, assertive, passionate, and I love to read and shop (I had to throw shop in there). In the midst of learning my authentic self, I had to learn I can’t want something worse than someone else, this is an act of non-authenticity and it WILL drain you. I have learned to accept who I am and that is really all that matters.

Passion and the Little Kid Inside You

Hello readers,

I remember as a little girl I used to line my baby dolls up in a row on one of my twin beds. I asked one of my teachers at school if I could have one of her extra roll books and some worksheets and there it was! I was a teacher! I had a full class of 20 dolls (with names) and they all had homework. I used to give out a lot of assignments too. I would create work packets and documents for them to work on for weeks at a time and turn back into me for a final grade. I guess in my mind I was a college professor! Well, as I got older I learned more about teaching and the salaries they made on the primary education level and said, nope can't do it. So I tucked that dream away and pursued architecture, but that didn't last long. Fast forward to May 2010 as I was sitting in my chair anxiously awaiting my row to be called to walk across the stage for the 2nd time (This graduation was for my Bachelors degree), I glanced over to the right and my eyes were enlarged with delight when I saw all the professors sitting with their robes on, I said to myself that is it! I want to be a professor! I want to teach professional and career development! That was the beginning of my journey. So, why am I telling you this? I recently watched a video speaking about finding your passion. The speaker mentioned going back to your childhood. Asking yourself what you loved to do when you were a kid.  I loved to teach and sell things (I had a mini- picture coloring and friendship bracelet business). Now I am back full circle. I am a teacher, trainer, and educator of adults and I have my own business with many more on the horizon.

Challenge: I ask you today to dream for 5 min about what you loved as a kid. Was it easy? Did you love to do it? Would you do it today? Say yes to yourself and awaken the kid in you. It may just be what you are supposed to be doing.

Think about what you wanted to do when you were a little kid and live that life now!

Are you a hustler?

Hello Readers,

Here we go again with  “words.” As you know I love to define words and understand their proper usage. The question I have for you is: Are a hustler? Wait, before you answer, let’s discuss what a hustler is. I researched this word and discovered that “hustler” has many definitions. The main definition is “an enterprising person who is determined to succeed” (Dictionary.com). I found the word enterprising to be intriguing, so you guessed it I looked it up. An enterprising person is one who is ready to tackle major projects of importance, so let’s bring it all together. A hustler is a relentless determined person who will take on important tasks to get the job done. A hustler is innovative, creative, unashamed, and ready to work. Do you have these qualities? Are you willing to succeed? The next time you call yourself a hustler, ask yourself these questions. The answer is in your actions. Take the hustler test to see where you stand.

1. Am I ready to pursue my dreams regardless of my circumstances?
2. Am I going to keep going when I don’t see immediate results?
3. Am I going to press through until I get what I want because I believe in myself?

Are you a hustler? You are if you answered yes to all three questions, so go hustle!

Strategizing

Hello Readers,

What does the word strategizing mean? As you know I love to research and define words. The definitions that I have read are from various resources. Here is my collective effort of my own rendition of the definition of strategizing, "The act of putting together a carefully planned out idea." Now, the question for you is what are you currently strategizing on? Before answering this question, you need to first have a strategy, an idea you want to carefully plan out.

Below are a few steps to strategizing your idea:

1. Get the idea out of your head, and put it on paper, laptop, or tablet. I recommend paper. This can be done with mind mapping or simply listing the idea.
2. Write down the purpose and focus of the idea. Why do you want to see this idea come to fruition? Who will this idea impact?
3. Who do you need to get on board? Who needs to help you with this idea? Who are the people who believe in you?
4. Start. What is the next step you need to take to get your idea moving? You have already taken the first step which is writing it down.

Action: I charge you to start strategizing on one idea of yours right now. Follow this process and have it done by December 31. You will be amazed at what you can do when you push yourself to do it.

Live YOUR life

Hello Readers,

Do you like to watch movies? I know I do. I love to watch how different stories can be played out as if they are realistic in our imaginary world. Many of the movies are about people’s lives depicted from an actual story even though the movie itself maybe fictional. I find it interesting for the actors and actresses to do something that seems like some people do as a part of their regular routine which is pretend to play the role of someone else. Some people believe they have to get validation from another human to become the person they want. Actors and actresses study for years to “PLAY” the role of someone else and here is the kicker, they get paid very well to do so. Are you living someone else's dream and not getting paid for it? Are you in a “role” you don’t want to be in?  If even you are “getting paid” or in a role you don’t want to be in, I want you to STOP IT NOW!  Live YOUR life NOW! After three deaths in my family within 10 days of each other, I know for sure I am on the right track in my life. I urge you to reevaluate where you are going and decide to live your life NOW.

Do you have this?

Patience

Why is the word “patience” such a troubling word? We live in a fast pace society and we want everything to happen when we want it to happen, or perhaps I am only speaking of myself. If by chance you fall into this category of needing more patience, then I ask you to read on. 2016 has been a good year for me in all aspects of my life and yet I still question sometimes when? When is this going to happen or when is that going to take place. The reality is I have come to understand is that having patience really awakens something within us. I now understand that no one is waiting on me to do anything. I have to make things happen and when I get in motion, poof,  the things happen that I have desired. I once again become reassured that I am on the right track. The challenge question for you is what are you waiting on to come to the light in your life? Perhaps you need to get in motion. Once I got in motion, I realized what I thought I needed patience for was already there waiting on me. Stop waiting on something to change, be the change you are waiting on. I have come to learn that patience can be your best friend if you let it.
